I thank my God every time I remember you. In all my prayers for all of you, I always pray with joy because of your partnership in the gospel from the first day until now, being confident of this, that he who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus.
Commentary
Revd. Mark Fletcher: Because the work which is at hand is not our work, it is God’s. Verse 6, Paul writes, I am confident of this, that he who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus. What a verse that is. Hold on to that. Memorise that. Lay that down in your heart. I am confident of this, that he who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion in the day of Christ Jesus. Paul is in prison. He’s anxious for the churches that he planted and the safety and well-being of the Christians that he loves, and yet he is reminded that it was never his work in the first place. He was simply joining in with what God is doing in this world. And if God began that work, then God is faithful and he will bring it to completion on the day of Christ’s return. And your faith is God at work in you. It’s not your doing. And so when it all seems too hard, when you’re struggling, never despair.
